Answer by rednickel You can no longer purchase ‘original’ kreteks (clove cigarettes) in the USA anymore. It is still legal to purchase online. The ban specifically bans the of clove cigarettes. It is not illegal to have them, to purchase them outside the states, or to make your own.
I’ve been a Djarum smoker for 10+ years and really didn’t believe the ban would go through, so I was caught without back up. The ‘new’ legal Djarums are a terrible substitution for a true Kretek smoker. Making your own is surprisingly easy, and kind of nice as you can really customize the flavor. Pick out your favorite rolling tobacco and pick up some whole cloves. The ratio I’ve been using is approx. 1:3 cloves to tobacco. The key is to start with whole cloves, and separate the ‘head’, or petals, from the stem. Finely grind the stems while just barely crushing the petals. The petal chunks are what slow the burn down and provide the signature ‘crackle’ of Kreteks. I also used a little chai-spiced tea to moisten the mixture (approx. 2 tbsp), spread it out on a cookie sheets and dried it in in the oven with NO heat. I then put the mixture in a glass jar and shake it before I start rolling. Once your comfortable with the process, try adding more or less, you can add Vanilla, clove, cinnamon extract or what ever comes to mind. The more you do it, the easier it becomes and then you get comfortable with making larger batches. I’m not sure what the shelf life would be, but I store my batch in the freezer. Happy rolling!
