In recent time, it has been seen that people do not prefer to take advice from professional financial advisors for investment purposes because they do not want to pay consultancy fees. They make investment decision based on their peers, colleagues, friends and relatives. They think that my friend has invested so why not me?
I can understand for those who have very little money and can not afford consultancy fees which, in some cases, are very high. But I can not understand for those who have abundance of money and make large investments without seeking advice from experienced professional financial advisors. These kinds of people do not conduct any self need based assessment and do large investment. These are the people who have adopted ‘get rich quick’ mentality and regret when they loose out the entire amount. Even though these people do not realize their mistake and blame on their fate and luck.
This article talks about the factors which an investor must consider before making any investment decision. These factors are very-very important which affect the performance of any big or small organization. Through this article I want to help to all short term or long term investors who make investment in share market or in any other investment avenues.
Before talking about these factors, I want to request to all my dear investors that first step to make any investment decision is to perform well organized and planned self need based assessment of various current and future financial needs which can be categorized in following ways:
¨ Medical & Ancillary needs (hospitalization or major illness);
¨ Savings for children education, financing for home, mortgage payment, children marriage, planning to two/four wheeler vehicle, short to medium term savings or any other purposes;
¨ Wealth accumulation;
¨ Family income protection or life insurance plans in the event of death or major accident;
¨ Cover for old age disability;
¨ Retirement plans etc.
This list does not end here. It just consists of common needs. Now, I will discuss these factors which seriously affect any company’s financial performance. I have distinguished these factors in 5 categories which are as follows:
a) Financial Factors;
b) External Factors;
Key Policies;
Industry;
Government Stance.
c) Intangibles;
d) Assets & Liabilities and
e) Management.
Let’s discuss these factors one by one.
a) Financial Factors:
This is the most important factor which explains everything about the company and every connected person- shareholders, creditors, financial institutions, foreign institutional investors and governments, to the company wants to know about income statement, financial position statement and cash flow of the company. It further can be divided in following categories:
¨ Historical, current and projected profits, balance-sheet and cash flows of the company;
¨ How well management is able to control the cost;
¨ Need for capex in the near future for the expansion purposes and source of arrangement;
¨ % of FDI allowed in this industry;
¨ Key financial ratios such as debt to equity ratio, return on equity, interest & debt coverage ratio, current ratio, Price Earning Ratio, PEG ratio etc.
b) External Factors:
These are the outside factors in which some are beyond control and may affect in the both ways. I would like to segregate these factors in three key categories which are as follows:
I. Key Policies Adopted By The Respective Authorities:
¨ Credit Policy and its ramifications on the business;
¨ Monetary Policy and its effects on the business;
¨ Fiscal Policy and its results on the business;
¨ Export/Import (Exim Policy) or Foreign Policy.
II. Industry:
¨ Total market size / share of the industry;
¨ Total contribution in the GDP;
¨ Total players operating in the industry;
¨ Demand and Supply Ratio;
¨ Life cycle of the industry;
¨ Total market share of the company in totality;
¨ Market leaders and its aggressiveness;
¨ Number of total products offered in the industry;
¨ Number of total products offered by the company;
¨ Life cycle of the running products;
¨ Key strategic policies adopted by the company;
¨ Key strategic policies adopted by the industry leaders;
¨ Revenue dependence on a particular product by the company;
¨ Technology dependence and fear of outdatedness;
¨ How long the company has been in this industry.
III. Governments Stance
¨ Government’s attitude towards the industry;
¨ Key movements/policies/activities adopted;
¨ Total expenditure by the government;
¨ Total Push Up package/bail out package offered.
c) Intangibles:
These are the factors which are very-very important and very tough to find out the correct value. These factors are as follows:
¨ Goodwill of the company;
¨ Intellectual Properties of the company such as Patents;
¨ Growth Potential of the business;
¨ Customers and Suppliers relationship and how much profitable they are to the company;
¨ Banks and Financial Institutions attitude towards the industry;
¨ Leverage on economies of scale if already not operating at these levels and if yes, then find out the diseconomies of level.
d)Assets & Liabilities:
These are the factors in which every bank, financial institutions, creditors and shareholders are interested in knowing the assets and liabilities of the company. These can be further segregated as follows:
¨ Value of Fixed Assets such as Property, Equipment;
¨ Value of Current Assets such as Debtors, Stock-in-hand;
¨ Total long-term liabilities;
¨ Total short-term liabilities;
¨ Worthiness of the ‘ Book’ and total number of .
e)Management of The Company:
This is a very crucial factor on which every company wants to leverage but very hard to find out the effectiveness of the management and its key personnel. These factors are as follows:
¨ Management’s track record for the last five years;
¨ Achievements of the company in the last five years;
¨ Commitments from the key employees of the company;
¨ Dependency of the business on key/other employees;
¨ Association of the big business tycoons to the company;
¨ Number of employees, location of premises and distribution coverage.
I hope from these factors it is clear that taking decision for own investment or suggesting for clients for investment purposes is not easy task as people think. In present scenario when market is very-very choppy and volatile becomes necessary to seek well experienced professional financial advisors advice before making small or big investment decision. Now I would like to take this opportunity to ask this question from my dear investors that is it not worth to pay small amount of consultancy fees if your financial advisor suggesting you right kind of investment avenues where you not only protect your principle amount but also get considerable returns form your investments?
It is my humble request to my dear investors that please do not adopt ‘get rich quick’ mentality and also do not make any investment in hurry when you yourself are not sure for your risk-return profile. In this competitive environment, where everybody wants to earn plenty of money becomes imperative to adopt the consumer’s thumb rule- ‘Buyers Beware’. These things I am mentioning because there are many persons in this financial industry who get certificates of ‘Financial Planner’ by just cramming books and pass the exams but do not possess the required knowledge and skills. If any person wants to invest and does not have time or resources to look for all these factors then I would like to advise him/her to invest through mutual funds where funds are managed by experienced & well qualified professionals. But there too, it becomes necessary to seek advice from experienced financial professional if you have no clue about the best schemes of the various mutual funds running in the financial market.
Having said that all the views are personal and I can not be held responsible for any untoward happening with anybody. With these words, I also welcome for any suggestions and inputs. People can write mail to me at anoopcfa@rediffmail.com

You might have seen it in the movies, or in TV shows, or on the cover of a gangster novel. The big boss – be he a mafia don, drug lord, or your plain, run-of-the-mill CEO – is sporting a large cigar, and is smoking it unaffectedly. He seems to like it, that tight, large wad of smoke and leaves. But what makes cigars so prized, and why is it often associated with wealth and business?
Very simply, a cigar is a rolled-up heap of dried, fermented tobacco. One end is lit with fire, and the other is the opening by which smoke can enter a user’s mouth. Cigar tobacco is special: its flavor is reputedly richer and deeper than the tobacco used for ordinary cigarettes. Such tobacco is grown in tropical countries, with Brazil, Cuba, Honduras, and Mexico leading the pack. Cuban cigars, in particular, are considered to be the best varieties, although experts contend that Nicaraguan and Honduran cigars easily rival the mighty Cuban.
Cigars were once extremely expensive, and were usually confined to banquets, where “smokers” were held. These were gatherings where important politicians convened to discuss important issues while they smoked. When the U.S. imposed a trade embargo on Cuba in the 20th century, the price of cigars rose much higher, and the use of them was confined to those who could afford them.
In mid-2005, however, cigar prices declined, allowing many smokers (and smoking beginners) to taste and enjoy cigar smoking. But what is there to enjoy in cigars? According to aficionados, cigars have less of the smoky taste of cigarettes, and can even take on the taste of whisky, chocolate, or even wine!
How are cigars made? Choice tobacco leaves are first harvested, then aged by a combination of heat and shade. This serves to lower the leaves’ water and sugar content, without causing leaves to rot. Once the dried leaves are ready, they are made to “die with grace” by a slow process of fermentation. During this time, humidity levels and temperature are controlled, such that the lea will ferment without disintegrating or rotting. In this critical period are ushered out of the leaves the flavors and aroma that characterize the cigar into which it will eventually be made.
When fermentation is done, leaves are sorted out depending on whether they will be used as filler for the cigar, or as wrapper. Leaves must be kept moist, and should be handled very carefully. As soon as they are sorted, a cigar maker will roll them into any of the various cigar shapes, carefully, and by hand.
The flavor of a cigar depends on the leaves used for its wrapper and filler. Wrapper leaves usually come from the widest part of a tobacco plant. Their color can range from the very light, mildly greenish brown shade called the Double Claro; to the oily, black Oscuro grown in Nicaragua, Mexico, Cuba, or Brazil. The color of a wrapper also describes the color of a cigar.
Most of a cigar is made up of fillers, or the interior, where smoking tobacco leaves are bundled together by elastic leaves called binders. Some cigar makers mix up a variety of leaves of various tastes and strengths, in to produce different flavors of cigar.
To keep their flavor, cigars should be stored at room temperature, but at relatively high humidity. A humidor, or a special wooden box, usually comes with cigars when they are purchased.
Although most certainly damaging to human health, cigars still retain their mystique, whether they are seen on the silver screen, or read about in books.
Cigar smoking enjoyed an abrupt, and steep, spike in popularity during the 1990s, after years of decline. Cigar bars and shops sprang up even in midsize towns and cities, while profits experienced heady growth. But during all the years between the industry’s heyday and this 1990s revival, these fictional cigar smokers from stage, screen and literature never stopped puffing away.
James Bond
This tuxedo-clad, luxury-obsessed, cynical secret agent first appeared in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale, in which the young Bond, a recent addition to the “00″ (double-o) ranks of the British Secret Intelligence Service, proves his mettle by winning a high-stakes game of roulette against industrialist/rogue villain Hugo Drax. The success of this novel led to a long-running film series, television adaptations, many Fleming-penned sequels and – after Fleming’s death – various new sequels by such authors as John Gardner, Charlie Higson and even Kingsley Amis.
Perhaps his biggest mark has been made on the medium of film, where his adventures have been followed by millions who’ve never read the Fleming novels or their offspring. Sean Connery made the character an icon in such films as Dr. No (1962), Goldfinger (1964) and Diamonds Are Forever (1971), with his old-blooded suavity and crackling, slightly Scots-inflected accent (“I’ll play yer game, y’rogue”).
Bond has been played with great deftness and assurance by actors Timothy Dalton and Pierce Bronson as well, though Roger Moore, with his painted-on hair and flippant manner, kept the role the longest (from 1973′s Live and Let Die all the way to 1985′s A View To a Kill).
Most recently, Daniel Craig has injected the role with a new pathos and toughness, in 2006′s Casino Royale, perhaps the most critically-lauded Bond film yet. (But spare a thought for poor George Lazenby, who essayed the role in 1969′s From Her Majesty’s Secret Service – this writer’s personal favorite.)
Bond is a heavy smoker, and a discriminating one. He smokes both cigars and cigarettes, preferring a blend of Balkan and Turkish tobacco with a high tar content. (Recent Bond movies have curtailed this habit somewhat.)
Holden Caulfield
Like so many precocious adolescents, Holden Caulfield enjoys a good cigar – besides the taste, it’s a rite of passage for a soul that seems irretrievably trapped in transit. In J.D. Salinger’s 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye – for many readers, the great American novel of adolescence, though it had and continues to have its detractors – Holden runs away from his boarding school, Pencey Prep, condemning what he considers its “phoniness,” and spends a memorably disjointed weekend in New York City looking for something worth hanging his life onto.
He visits old friends, tries (and fails) to lose his virginity, drinks himself into semicoherence, and is hit on by one of his old teachers. Along the way, he treats readers to his reflections on the dishonesty, image-consciousness, and hypocrisy of adult society, sexual politics, and popular culture “I hate the movies!” while displaying, and rebuking himself for, some of these same traits. (“You’re always saying ‘Glad to’ve met you’ to people you’re not glad to’ve met at all.”) He washes away obscene graffiti written near the site of his old elementary school, and wishes that he could rescue his younger sister, Phoebe, from society’s various affronts to childhood innocence; but, finally, he realizes that nobody can scrub all the dirt from life, and it’s foolish to try.
Perry White/J. Jonah Jameson
What would a superhero be without his secret identity – and without the cigar-chomping editor-in-chief who makes that secret identity’s life painful? Perry White, the larger-than-life editor of the Daily Planet, first appeared in the seventh issue of Superman (1940), and has bedeviled the existence of Clark Kent (that paper’s mild-mannered reporter) ever since. He is rarely pictured without his cigar. He is also a fan of Elvis.
J. Jonah Jameson, editor of the New York-based Daily Bugle, is just as crusty in his demeanor as Perry White, but, as the editor of a Rupert Murdoch-ish sensationalist tabloid, his sense of ethics don’t match those of his Daily Planet colleague. When Spider-Man begins his New York crimefighting career, Jameson wages a smear campaign against the hero – not knowing that one of his many underpaid freelance employees, photographer Peter Parker, is Spider-Man’s alter ego. But Jameson has a good side – as a young reporter he waged similarly tireless campaigns against organized crime and in support of civil rights.

I live in New York and while walking through harlem though of a way werid way to describe TRUE Socialism vs. Today’s Capitalism: Buildings.
Say some of the rundown sh!thole buildings in harlem are Capitalist buildings and a Bronx or Brooklyn lofts are Socialist Buildings.
Socialist Building: Everyone in the building has a stake in the building and should worry about any and all repairs or issues that arise. Rent Prices are a base amount but rent increases can be determined on what shape the tenants keep the building in and how much landlord has had to spend on repairs/legal fees due to problem tenants. Should the building ever go coop — tenants would recieve a discount based on past contributions and the amount of time living in the building.
-Tenants plants to place in the hallways and lobbies — with their own money, yes everyone is allowed to look at the plants. -Tenants respectfully ask each other to please clean up the laundry rooms and staircases — building never sees a mess in the hallways -Tenants leave sign on the Roof Door asking all beer bottles and cigarette butts to be picked up after gethering on the roof – roof is always clean and presentable even though young people use it to party -Tenants and Landlord take up a collection to add a new boiler which will help the Landlord provide 3 hours of heat a day instead of 2. -Tenants and Landlord take the tenants contributions to the building into considerations before giving rent hikes every 2 years. -Tenants play music at decent levels after 9pm – you do NOT have the ‘freedom’ to blast music at all hours — Building has ZERO Noise complaints every year. -People make it a point to say hello even you walk by the person — no one is scared of each other, building feels safer. -Everyone has privacy, no one has the right to enter your apartment simply because they put money into a ‘Renovation Fund’
Capitalist Building: Since we all pay rent, no one has the right to tell us anything. We do what we want, when we want and if it feels good, we’re going to do it in our apartment regardless of how it affects others. The fact that you worked hard for your rent money means you have complete freedom to do as you please once you walk in your apartment.
-No one decorates the hallways, MY purchases belong in MY apartment – empty delapidated hallways -Hallways are painted when the landlord decides – Dirty hallways are painted every 3 years as per NY law. -I pay rent so no one can tell me not to litter, that’s what the cleaning guy is for — Cleaning staff gets sick of filthy hallways and simply picks up potato chip bags and beer bottles leaving blankets of crusted dirt all over knowing it will show up again within 24 hours. -I pay rent so I can play music as loud as I want – Police are called twice a month because someone is banging someone elses door down at 3am due to loud music — people start hating other, creating a ‘trapped’ feeling for tenants. -I pay rent so I can smoke anything I want on the roof and no one can tell me sh!t — roof soon becomes filled with cigar tobacco, beer cans, urine and empty boxes of ez widers, this leads to the landloard placing a lock and alarm on the roof door. -When the landlord takes up a collection for 2,000 dollars (around 50-75 dollars per tenant) to fix the boiler he’s met with “we pay rent, and the boiler wouldn’t even be mine — I’m not giving you money for a boiler to put in YOUR building” Boiler isn’t fixed and everyone complains about the Radiaters not getting hot enough. -I pay rent with MY money so I can let my kids run a muck in the hallways using foul language and smoking whatever they want — if the noise goes into your apartment that’s YOUR problem. Remember I pay rent with MY money. -Also when people of higher income start to leave the building due to it being a Sh!thole, the people of the Capitalist building tell the landlord to turn to the city for renovation funds then scream bloody murder when it takes more than 6 months.
