Cigars: How to Buy Cuban Cigars

Everyone knows that Cuban cigars are the most coveted cigars, renown worldwide for their smoothness and rich flavors. Indeed, Cuban cigars are so prized that many illegitimate dealers have been known to sell fake Cubans to unsuspecting cigar smokers. How do you tell if what you have is a fake or the real thing? First, make certain that you purchase your cigars from a legitimate dealer. Buying from your local tobacconist or a reputable mail order business can protect you from forking your money over for a box of fake cigars.

If you have an opportunity to purchase a box of purported Cuban cigars, but have your doubts, take the time to examine the box before purchasing it. Here are a few tips to help you spot the fakes from the real thing.

The most important thing to examine is the box. Authentic Cuban cigars will contain a green and white warranty seal on the left front side of the box. The seal will contain an insignia that has a picture of a shield and a hat. On the upper right hand corner of the box, you should find a white sticker that is placed diagonally with the word ‘Habanos’ printed on it. The overall appearance of the box should be neat and clean. If the box appears damaged, smudged, frayed, or marked, avoid it. If the color of the box is dull, don’t buy it. Even if the cigars are the real things, their quality may have suffered in transport. If you are in the market for Cohiba, Trinidad, or Q’dorsay brand cigars, know that all authentic Cohiba’s will contain the green and white warranty seal on the right hand side of the box.

On the bottom of the box of cigars, you should find a heat stamp with the words ‘Habanos.’ The heat stamp should be impressed onto the bottom of the box. Fake Cuban cigar boxes often find other ways to imprint this label, such as using rubber stamps or paper labels. You should also find a factory code stamp at the bottom that is stamped in green, blue or black ink. This stamp will tell you when and where the cigars were rolled.

If you can open the box, take the time to smell the tobacco. Cuban cigars will have a deep, rich aroma, unmistakable to dedicated cigar aficionados. If the smell is off, or very weak, chances are you do not have a box of authentic Cuban cigars in your hands. The cigars should be facing the same way, and the top row may appear slightly flattened. The caps on all the cigars should appear identical, and the foot of each cigar should be cut clean. The bands on all the cigars should also be identical, and should be arranged so that they face the same direction. If allowed, test the cigars out by pressing down on them. Feel along the entire length of each cigar, checking for soft or hard spots. The cigars should feel firm yet pliable.

Some Facts About Cuban Cigars

Cuban cigars are the most famous cigars among cigar enthusiasts as they are made with hand with great care given to the quality of manufacturing. While making the cigars each leaf is carefully selected, cleaned and dried meticulously and finally rolled through a very complex process. Such sort of a manufacturing process will take more time as compared with cigars made with the assistance of machines. But the smoking experience that the hand made Cuban cigars provides is beyond comparison.

As a result of the embargo placed by the United States on Cuban cigars, there has been a big gap between the demand and supply of the product in the world market. Therefore there had been a surge in the number of spurious Cuban cigar products in the market. Hence it is imperative to differentiate between genuine Cuban cigars and fake ones. For a person who have already used Cuban cigars, differentiating between the real one and the counterfeit, is not a very difficult task. The smoking experience that one would get while using genuine Cuban cigars is absolutely unique, which cannot be provided by ordinary brands or spurious products.

There are certain factors which would be of help to you, if you want to recognise the counterfeit Cuban cigars from the original one. The most important factor is the length of the cigars. Always there won’t be more than 1/16th inch difference between the published length of the cigars and the actual product. Cuban cigars will have a nice ring to it, which is tight, of good colour and contains the word “Habana.” If the word is misspelled, blemished or written in crayon, then chances are that the cigar is spurious. The foot end of Cuban cigars will be cut cleanly and if there are some discrepancies, then the cigar is not the real one.

Cuban Cigars Legal in 2010 – Close but No Cigar!

Among cigar smokers Cuban cigars are always abuzz.  However, legalized Cuban cigars arenâ??t as close as you might think.  Though there are many out there that suspect the embargo could be lifted in 2010, you can bet that there are other things that will have to happen before coveted Cubans are going to be legal in the USA.

Since the new administration has taken over, Barack Obama has discussed lifting the Cuban embargo and Cuban cigar lovers have salivated at the chance to get all the Cubans they can at reasonable prices.  Itâ??s not likely, unfortunately, that this can happen overnight.  It is going to have to happen in stages and to quote Rush Limbaugh â??â??â?¦you have no clue what is ahead of us as cigar smokers. What will happen is that the domestic manufacturers, defined by those who are in the Dominican and in Honduras, Nicaragua, Cameroon, all of the places where elements of cigars are grown, and all the places where theyâ??re assembled, these people have in many cases marketed the brands of the Cuban cigars youâ??re talking about Hoyo De Monterrey, Punch, Simon Bolivar, all of these great Cuban brands have been marketed by other owners in the United States, and they are going to go to the Commerce Department, and theyâ??re going to say we have made these brands popular, we have invested in the product and in the brand in this country, and theyâ??re gonna ask the Commerce Department to ban the import of competing brand-name cigars from Cuba.â?

Though itâ??s likely that weâ??re going to have to wait a while for Cuba cigars to be legal in the US I think that once Cubans are legal there will be a huge surge of cigar smokers and cigar smoking.  Much like the storm of online poker websites and poker players hit once Texas Holdâ??em became popular the cigar world will see the biggest cigar boom it has ever seen if Cuban cigars are legalized in the US.

There are also other economic factors that come into play when youâ??re talking about legalizing the most coveted cigars on the planet.  The economies of Honduras, The Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua will be severely affected once legal Cuban cigars are available to the masses. But, as I stated before, these economies will eventually come back to life stronger than ever once everyone realizes that Cuban cigars arenâ??t really that much different than the cigars produced in the above mentioned countries.  Not to mention that once Cuba has to produce cigars for Americans its production will be so overdone that the likelihood of the quality control diminishing is quite strong.

So, if youâ??re crossing your fingers for 2010 to be the year that youâ??re able to get all the Cuban cigars you want without having to sneak them in â?? keep dreaming!  Weâ??ve got a long way before stocking up on Cubans will be legal in the US!

Cuban Cigar

Last spring (2006), the MBA program here at UGA went to Cuba to study its economy. We had a nice time, but it didn’t take long to determine that communism is a cruel joke. This is video of a farmer in Cuartel rolling a hand-made cigar the old-fashioned way. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t even let us take still pictures at the Robusto factory in Havana, so I have no video of the industrialized process.

Cuban Cigars ? How They Are Made

Have you ever had the pleasure of puffing slowly on a real Cuban cigar? Many of those who smoke cigars or pipe tobacco on a regular basis claim that there is no comparison between the flavor and smoothness of real Cuban cigars and the rest of the competition.

Those that have fallen in love with these special cigars often wonder exactly how they are made. Most of the cigar companies now operating in Cuba have been rolling cigars by hand for generations. If you’re interested in the delicate process that goes into their craft, here are some things you should know.

Even thought it only takes about eighty or ninety days for a tiny tobacco seed to grow up into a full plant that can be harvested and used to make Cuban cigars, most plants are only harvested two or three times a year in the best regions of the country.

The seedlings are planted on a rotating schedule so that they soil can have time to recuperate between harvests. The crops are closely supervised by field managers that keep their eyes out for insects and other pests that could compromise the quality of the plants.

One the tobacco leaves are picked and pruned, they are taken to special drying houses where they are hung upside down to cure and ferment. There are thousands of racks in each of these drying houses, which are often open to the elements.

The leaves are packed in close together to that the moisture can build up between the leaves and sweat out the impurities in the tobacco. Water is continually sprayed on the leaves as they are packed and repacked during their thirty to forty day stay in the sweating houses.

After an additional curing and packing process, the tobacco is finally ready to be shipped to the rolling facilities where they will be formed into the Cuban cigars that are known and loved all over the world. In order to transform the loose tobacco into Cuban cigars, leaves are chosen very carefully for their size, shape, and texture.

Less experienced rollers are in charge of packing the initial leaf and pressing it in a form. Then the master rollers take over the process of forming the dense cigar and wrapping it in the all important outer leaf. In most cases, this talent has been passed down for generations in a single family.

Joe Silva is a passionate Cuban cigar aficionado and is also an expert in cigar-making, etiquette and humidors. He has been collecting and enjoying cigars for nearly 20 years and has since been advising many cigar enthusiasts on everything from the history of Cuban cigars to choosing the right humidor for effective cigar storing. Joe also receives over a hundred enquiries everyday on how to purchase some of the finest cigars available online.
