Why Cuban Cigars Are Better Than American Cigars

Perhaps, the question should be: Why do people consider Cuban cigars to be better than American cigars? Putting that aside, it is obvious that everywhere in the world and in the United States of America, cigars made in Cuba are believed to be better than their counterparts made in the US. The reasons for this can be largely attributed to the very essence of man. If you are wondering what that means, then read on.

Forbidden Fruit

It is human nature for people to want the very things which they cannot have or are not supposed to have. Cuban cigars used to be available like any other cigar until the 1962 embargo on trade with Cuba came into effect. Before the embargo, cigars made in Cuba were not considered to be any more special than those made in the United States. Yes, they were different and this was due to a number of factors such as the climate in which the tobacco was grown and the manufacturing process. The appeal of Cuban cigars at that time was that they offered refreshing variety. But since the embargo stopped the importation of these cigars and made it illegal, a Cuban cigar became a must-have item. It is worth noting here that many of the original cigar manufacturers from Cuba moved to other countries like the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras, and still produce and export cigars to the US in the same way they used to. In fact, some of these other cigars are better than a lot of cigars currently made in Cuba, and yet we still pine the most for the ones we are not supposed to have: the ever popular habanos.

Originality

Cigars were first encountered by the explorers of the new world– Christopher Columbus and his crew – in the Caribbean islands of which Cuba was one of them. This was as far back as the 15th century and therefore, Cuba is considered one of the original places in which cigars were first made and smoked. For the cigar aficionado then, smoking a cigar from one of the true birthplaces of cigars is the ultimate experience. This is not eccentric behavior. It is as perfectly normal as a wine lover who only prefers wine made from the grape vineyards of the Mediterranean.

Scarcity

Just like any item which you cannot simply purchase by walking into a store is highly regarded, so are Cuban cigars. Ignoring the fact that the scarcity of Cuban cigars is due to the trade embargo mentioned above, if they were scarce due to any other factor such as maybe declining production they would automatically achieve a higher status in the eye of the smoker. We do not enjoy being common and are always trying to stand out. Consequently, smoking a Cuban cigar which a large number of people cannot get their hands on is one way to achieve that distinction.

Price

Despite the trade embargo, Cuban cigars still find their way into the United States. Since it is illegal to import these cigars into the US even if they were bought in another country, any specimens found on US soil are bound to be expensive. For most people price is an indication of the quality of a product and therefore, the more expensive cigar automatically becomes the better cigar. There are also cigars that were imported into the United States before the embargo was announced. These are authentic and rare and therefore, command steep prices.

So there you have it. For the above reasons, many an individual has been sold fake and inferior cigars disguised as Cuban cigars. Are Cuban cigars great cigars? Of course, they are. We say they are and so they are.
